    I can name four good restaurants in Navarra. Hotel Restaurnte Xabvier is the best of them.

    Quaint place, very out of the way. Good facilities. No stores or other restaurants nearby.

    From the strters my wife ordered coquettes filled with cod and criss-crossed with stripes of modena. I had vol-u-vans of gambas and spinach. We switched plates part way through, so we could each enjoy both. They both were really good, but we agreed the vol-u-van won by a little. (note, there were at least five more starters on the menú we could have chosen from).

    On a budget today we asked for the 'menú del dia' (20 Euros each + drinks). Ordered a bottle of house red wine, another of sparkling wáter. The wine was from a nearby vinyard: good nose and body, with the sort of tartness that can accompany rich food; perhaps better so than on its own.

    Desert was a tour de forcé. The best cheescake we had tasted since Philadelphia on our American tip. With a scoop of vanela icecream beside the wedge of chesecake. Never had this combination. Hope never not to in future.

    This entrecote was none of those: it was thicker than we expected, tander, and most importantly: tasty. It took up most of the large plates, leaving a little room for oven bowned potatoes and a mxed pimiento and wild green garnish.

    Having once stayed nearly a month at this lovely rustic hotel - situated in the grounds of a prime historic and spiritual attraction of Spain - and having enjoyed the agreeable service of its staff and owners: we were glad for this opportunity to return to a place of fond memory.

    For the second course we each had the entrecote, rare. Not unusual for entrecote to be a main course option on upscale fixed price menus, but, maybe to eonomise it is cut thin, a bit tough and tasteless.
